Sports Minister Augurs Good Performance In World Cup 2006

Luanda, 10/12/2005 - Angolan Youth and Sports Minister José Marcos Barrica recognised on Friday in Leipzig, Germany, the debilities still visible in the national soccer team, but predicts good performances in the 2006 World Cup to be played from 09 June to 09 July 2006.

According to the Minister who speaking to Angolan media organs at Leipzig where the draw was held and in which Angola was placed in Group D with Portugal, Mexico and Iran, the idea is not winning the competition but having a prestigious exhibition for the country and for Africa.

"We have spirit and this is what will make us play well", affirmed the Minister who returns to the country on Sunday.

In Angola, Marcos Barrica will receive in an audience the German Franz Beckenbauer, who jets in Luanda on Tuesday, December 13, in ambit of a tour through African Countries which qualified for the 2006 World Cup.

The former star of the German soccer, co-ordinator of the organisation of the event that his country will host, will hold various meet in Angola with the football federation and other sports institutions.

Soccer/World Cup: Scolari Considers Angola-Portugal Encounter "Special"

Luanda, 10/12/2005 - Portugal's National Team, Brazilian coach Luiz Felipe Scolari affirmed on Friday that playing Angola in the World Cup will be a special opportunity due to the historic ties that unite both peoples, but reminded that each team aims at winning.

Speaking to the Portuguese press soon after the Friday draw in Leipzig, Germany, the Portuguese manager remembered the qualifying stage in which both teams hoped that each of them qualified for Germany 2006.

The relationships with Angola need, as expected, a special remark, probably because the competition will seriously require forgetting such kindness.

"We hoped that Angola qualified and the Angolans did the same for us in Euro- 2004. Now each one thinks of winning", he said, stressing the importance of the first match precisely against Angola.

After saying this, Scolari concluded diplomatically. "In this group, all teams are favourites".

David v Goliath: Cologne, 8 June, Angola v Portugal - FIFA.com

A Hollywood scriptwriter could not have dreamt up a better scenario for Angola's first ever finals match. The African team will face Portugal, their former colonial rulers and a country where many of their footballers are based, among them the Benfica striker Mantorras.
