Cup: Scolari Considers Angola-Portugal Encounter "Special"
|
| Luanda, 10/12/2005 - Portugal's
National Team, Brazilian coach Luiz Felipe Scolari affirmed
on Friday that playing Angola in the World Cup will be a special
opportunity due to the historic ties that unite both peoples,
but reminded that each team aims at winning.
Speaking to the Portuguese press soon after the Friday draw in Leipzig, Germany,
the Portuguese manager remembered the qualifying stage in which both teams
hoped that each of them qualified for Germany 2006.
The relationships with Angola need, as expected, a special remark, probably
because the competition will seriously require forgetting such kindness.
"We hoped that Angola qualified and the Angolans did the same for us in Euro-
2004. Now each one thinks of winning", he said, stressing the importance of the
first match precisely against Angola.
After saying this, Scolari concluded diplomatically. "In this group, all teams
are favourites". |

Cologne, 8 June, Angola v Portugal - FIFA.com
A Hollywood scriptwriter could not have dreamt up a better scenario for Angola's
first ever finals match. The African team will face Portugal, their former colonial
rulers and a country where many of their footballers are based, among them the
Benfica striker Mantorras. |
